The first time I came across Legend of Fuyao, I wasn’t really looking for another historical fantasy drama. I had already watched plenty of Chinese dramas, and I thought I knew what to expect: beautiful costumes, palace politics, romance, and a few dramatic battles.
Then I watched an episode.
Pretty quickly, I realized that Legend of Fuyao was going to be different. The story moves across kingdoms, the characters constantly face new challenges, and the main character isn’t simply waiting for someone else to save her. Fuyao is determined to discover who she really is and create her own path.
If you enjoy Chinese fantasy dramas with romance, adventure, political intrigue, and strong characters, this is one title worth knowing about.
What Is Legend of Fuyao About?
Legend of Fuyao is a Chinese historical fantasy television drama based on the novel Empress Fuyao by Tianxia Guiyuan.
The drama follows Fuyao, a young woman who begins her journey as a servant but gradually becomes involved in events much bigger than she could have imagined.
Her journey takes her through different kingdoms, where she encounters powerful rulers, dangerous enemies, political conspiracies, and unexpected friendships.
What makes the story particularly interesting to me is the way Fuyao develops along the way. She isn’t presented as a perfect hero from the beginning. Instead, we watch her become stronger as she experiences hardship.
Legend of Fuyao and Its Main Character
At the heart of the drama is Fuyao, played by Yang Mi.
Fuyao is brave, intelligent, stubborn, and independent. She can be impulsive, too, which actually makes her more enjoyable to watch.
She doesn’t simply accept the position society gives her. When someone tries to control her future, Fuyao pushes back.
Why Fuyao Is Such an Interesting Character
I’ve watched plenty of fantasy dramas where the female lead starts out weak and immediately becomes powerful because of some special ability.
Fuyao’s journey feels more gradual.
She trains, struggles, makes mistakes, and learns from difficult situations. Her determination becomes one of her greatest strengths.
Some of the qualities that make Fuyao memorable include:
- Courage in dangerous situations
- Strong loyalty toward her friends
- Independence
- Willingness to challenge powerful people
- Emotional resilience
- A strong desire to understand her own identity
For me, that combination makes her more than just a typical fantasy heroine.
The Romance in Legend of Fuyao
Of course, no discussion of Legend of Fuyao would be complete without talking about its romance.
Fuyao’s relationship with Zhangsun Wuji, played by Ethan Juan, is one of the central parts of the story.
Their relationship doesn’t develop in a perfectly simple way. There are misunderstandings, secrets, danger, teasing, and plenty of moments where you wonder whether they can actually trust each other.
That’s what kept me interested.
Fuyao and Zhangsun Wuji
Zhangsun Wuji is intelligent, powerful, and politically influential. At first, he can come across as somewhat mysterious and difficult to understand.
As the story progresses, his relationship with Fuyao becomes much deeper.
I especially enjoyed the contrast between the two characters. Fuyao is often direct and emotional, while Wuji tends to think several steps ahead.
Their personalities clash, but that clash also creates some of the drama’s most entertaining scenes.
A Fantasy World Filled With Different Kingdoms
One thing that immediately stands out in Legend of Fuyao is the scale of its world.
The story isn’t limited to one palace or one city. Fuyao’s journey takes her through different kingdoms and political environments.
Each location introduces new characters, conflicts, and challenges.
That larger setting gives the drama an adventurous feeling. Instead of watching the same group of characters deal with one problem for dozens of episodes, the story keeps expanding.
Political Intrigue and Palace Drama
If you’re someone who enjoys palace politics, there is plenty here to keep you occupied.
Powerful rulers and political factions are constantly making plans behind the scenes. Characters have their own ambitions, and not everyone is honest about what they want.
I found these parts especially interesting when the personal story and political story came together.
A character’s decision might seem romantic or emotional on the surface, but there can be a much bigger political consequence behind it.
The Action and Martial Arts
Another reason people are drawn to Chinese fantasy dramas is the action, and Legend of Fuyao certainly delivers plenty of it.
Fuyao isn’t helpless when trouble arrives. Her martial arts abilities become an important part of her development.
The action sequences add energy to the story and help demonstrate how much Fuyao has changed.
One of my personal tips for watching this drama is to pay attention to Fuyao’s fighting journey. Her growth isn’t only emotional. Her physical abilities develop alongside her confidence.
Legend of Fuyao Cast
The cast is another major strength of the series.
The main cast includes:
- Yang Mi as Fuyao
- Ethan Juan as Zhangsun Wuji
- Vicki Zhao as Emperor Wuji’s mother
- Liu Yijun
- Gao Weiguang
- Lai Yi
Yang Mi carries much of the drama’s emotional weight, while Ethan Juan brings a different energy to Zhangsun Wuji.
The supporting cast also helps make the different kingdoms and political conflicts feel more complete.
What I Enjoyed Most About the Drama
If I had to choose the biggest reason I enjoyed Legend of Fuyao, I’d say it’s the sense of adventure.
The story doesn’t feel like it’s simply about romance.
It combines several elements:
- Fantasy
- Romance
- Martial arts
- Political intrigue
- Mystery
- Adventure
- Family and identity
That combination gives the series something for different types of viewers.
If one storyline isn’t grabbing your attention at a particular moment, another element usually comes along to keep things moving.
My Personal Tips for Watching Legend of Fuyao
After spending time with the drama, I have a couple of tips for anyone thinking about starting it.
Tip 1: Don’t Rush Through the Story
There are a lot of characters and political relationships to remember.
I found it easier to enjoy the drama when I stopped trying to remember every single name and focused first on the major characters and their motivations.
Once the larger story becomes clear, the smaller details make much more sense.
Tip 2: Give Fuyao Time to Develop
If you’re expecting the main character to become incredibly powerful immediately, you may need a little patience.
Fuyao’s development is part of the fun.
Personally, I think watching her face setbacks makes her later achievements more satisfying.
Why Fans Still Talk About Legend of Fuyao
Chinese historical fantasy dramas have become increasingly popular internationally, and Legend of Fuyao has many of the qualities that make this genre so appealing.
It offers elaborate costumes, beautiful scenery, romance, action, mystery, and larger-than-life characters.
But beyond the visual elements, the story is ultimately about identity and freedom.
Fuyao spends much of her journey trying to understand where she came from and what kind of person she wants to become.
That theme gives the story an emotional center.
Is Legend of Fuyao Worth Watching?
In my opinion, yes—especially if you already enjoy Chinese fantasy dramas, Wuxia dramas, or historical romance.
It may not be the perfect choice for someone who prefers short, simple stories. The series has a large cast and a complicated plot, so you need to give it some attention.
But if you’re willing to invest the time, there’s plenty to enjoy.
I’d particularly recommend it to viewers who like strong female protagonists, fantasy adventures, complicated romances, and stories involving kingdoms and political struggles.
Final Thoughts on Legend of Fuyao
For me, Legend of Fuyao works because it brings several familiar drama elements together while giving the main character a genuine journey.
Fuyao isn’t simply searching for love. She’s searching for answers about herself, fighting against people who want to control her, and learning what it means to make her own choices.
The romance with Zhangsun Wuji adds another emotional layer, while the fantasy world, martial arts, and political conflicts keep the story moving.
